Belarus’ accession to Shanghai Cooperation Organization set to start at Samarkand summit

MOSCOW, Sept. 8 (BelTA) — Belarus’ procedure for joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is set to begin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, which is due to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on September 15-16, BelTA learned from Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on September 8.

According to the source, a number of promising decisions are expected to be made at the summit. Iran could sign a memorandum of commitment with the aim of becoming a member state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This will open an opportunity for Tehran to adhere to the founding documents and international agreements of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The launch of the procedure for Belarus’ accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is also expected. Apart from this, memoranda have been prepared to formalize the status of Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia as dialogue partners. The process of granting a dialogue partnership to Bahrain, the Maldives and a number of other countries will begin, said Maria Zakharova.

Belarus is currently an observer state in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
