President Biden on Wednesday, reacting to the leaked draft opinion signaling the Supreme Court’s intention to overturn Roe v. Wade, criticized Republicans, saying the controversy was “much more than abortion” and warning that the “MAGA mob” was “the most extreme political organization that has existed in recent American history.”

Following remarks from the White House announcing that his administration is ‘on track’ to cut the federal deficit by $1.5 trillion by the end of the fiscal year, the president was asked about the plan of leaked opinion written by Judge Samuel Alito, which indicates the court’s high level plans to overturn Roe v. Wade, which would leave decisions on abortion restrictions to the states.

BIDEN ‘NOT PREPARED’ TO LEAVE RIGHT TO DETERMINATION OF PRIVACY TO ‘CREVITES’ IN ‘LOCAL AREAS’

“This is about so much more than abortion,” Biden said, pointing to Roe as part of the right to privacy as he did on Tuesday after the draft advisory was released.

Biden reflected on the Supreme Court’s confirmation process of former President Reagan’s nominee Robert Bork in the late 1980s when he was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“It reminds me of the debate with Robert Bork. Bork believed the only reason you had inherent rights was because the government gave them to you,” Biden recalled. “When I questioned him as president, I said, ‘I believe I have the rights that I have not only because the government gave them to me, which you believe, but because I am only a child of God – I exist.'”

“So the idea that there is somehow an inherent right, there is no right to privacy, there is no right,” Biden continued. “There had been a law prohibiting a married couple from buying a contraceptive in the privacy of their own room and using it. Well, that was struck down.”

Biden was referring to Griswold v. Connecticut, which he said “was seen as a bad move, working on, I guess, the Supreme Court guys.”

“Now what if you have states changing the law, saying LGBT kids, who can’t be in classrooms with other kids, are they legitimate to the extent that the decision is written?” Biden asked.

“What are the next things that are going to be attacked? ” He asked. “Because this MAGA mob is truly the most extreme political organization that has ever existed in American history – in recent American history.”

Biden’s comments on ‘MAGA’ come after he said last month that the GOP ‘isn’t your dad’s Republican party’, saying he’s moved to a ‘MAGA party’, warning that right-wing politicians “who know better” are “afraid to do the right thing” for fear of losing a primary election.

A draft Supreme Court opinion on a case that deals with the precedence of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey was obtained and made public by Politico in an unprecedented and stunning leak from the high court on Monday night.

“We hold that deer and Casey must be overturned,” wrote Judge Samuel Alito in the document, titled “Opinion of the Court” for Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. “It is time to respect the Constitution and to return the question of abortion to the elected representatives of the people. representatives. »

But Biden said on Tuesday he was “not ready” to leave the issue of privacy to the “whims” of the public in “local areas,” warning that a Supreme Court draft opinion overruling Roe against Wade was a “radical decision” that would jeopardize “a whole range of rights”.

If Roe were overturned, decisions on the legal status of abortion would be left to individual states.

The draft opinion would abolish the Roe Foundation, which argues that abortion should be legal in all states because of a constitutional right to privacy. Many conservative jurists say that such a general right does not exist.

“Look, the idea, it concerns me, that we’re going to, after 50 years, decide that a woman doesn’t have the right to choose, number one,” Biden said Tuesday. “But equally profound is the rationale, and the fact remains that any other decision in the notion of privacy is in question.”

He added: “If this were to be maintained, a whole range of rights are at stake, and it would be a fundamental change.”

Biden warned that if the Supreme Court decides to overturn Roe v. Wade, as she pointed out in the leaked notice, issues around marriage rights, birth control rights, and more will come into question.

“One of the issues that this court, many on the court, has failed to recognize is that there is a right to privacy in the Constitution,” Biden said.

“If this decision holds, it really is a radical move,” Biden said. “All the decisions you make in private life, who you marry, whether you can have an abortion, how you raise your child…it’s a fundamental change.”

The president went on to say that “one of the reasons” he voted against “a number of members of the court” was because “they refuse to acknowledge that there is a 9th Amendment.”

The Ninth Amendment states that “the enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed as denying or denigrating others retained by the people.”

According to Classroom Annenberg, the Ninth Amendment is a “constitutional safety net intended to make clear that individuals have other basic rights, in addition to those enumerated in the First through Eighth Amendments.”

“They refuse to recognize that there is a right to privacy,” the president said Tuesday. “I mean, there are so many fundamental rights that are affected by this.”

The president added: “And I’m not prepared to leave that to the whims and the – and the – of the public at this time in local areas.”

In September, Biden directed the White House Gender Policy Council and the White House Office of Legal Counsel to launch “a whole-of-government effort to respond” to the Supreme Court ruling that allowed the law “ extreme” of Texas that banned more abortions to remain in effect. .

“I have asked my Gender Policy Council and the White House Counsel’s Office to prepare options for an administration response to the ongoing attack on abortion and reproductive rights, according to a variety of possible outcomes in the cases pending before the Supreme Court,” Biden said.
