A conservative group in Missouri has launched an online map identifying what they claim are “hotspots” of “woke activity”.
The Liberty Alliance, which presents itself as an organization “committed to fighting the Woke Agenda that pervades all of Missouri,” now hosts a “heatmap” with pinned destinations on its webpage.
As of press time, the map featured pins from 12 Missouri areas that the organization has highlighted — all of which contain links to events in schools or school districts. Many pins redirect users to videos alleging that Missouri educational institutes are pushing critical race theory.
“The first step in fighting back is to uncover their crazy ideas — from critical race theory to preparing toddlers with sexually explicit books,” Liberty Alliance wrote on its website. “That’s why we’ve officially launched the Woke Heat Map – an interactive tool designed to expose the senseless actions of the radical left.”
The organization added that the map “will alert Missourians to the madness happening in their own communities.”
Critical Race Theory is an academic framework that examines how America’s history of racism and discrimination continues to impact the country today. The CRT has also become a GOP talking point and a lucrative buzzword for the right.
The use of “awakened” as a pejorative term has also been seized by some far-right figures.
For example, former President Donald Trump’s media company touts its proposed streaming service as an “unawakened alternative” for conservatives. Earlier this month, billionaire Elon Musk said he was getting into politics to stop the “Waking Mind Virus” from destroying civilization.
Spencer Bone, executive director of Liberty Alliance, said in a meeting that the initiative would help trace any “crazy action taken by a crazed leftist”.
The organization’s website also asks people to submit their own evidence of “woke efforts” to “expose the radical left.” “Is something crazy going on in your community? We want to know,” reads the preamble to the organization’s submission form.
Liberty Alliance is currently registered as a social welfare organization and is not considered a political organization. In August 2020, the Missouri Ethics Commission rejected a state Democratic Party complaintwhich asserted that Liberty Alliance behaved like a political action committee.
