From TONY JOHN, Port Harcourt
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) gubernatorial candidate in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Abe, said the party had become the largest political party in the state.
He spoke at the Port Harcourt Polo Club in Port Harcourt yesterday, while addressing thousands of his supporters who staged a million man march in his honour.
Abe said if elected governor in 2023, his administration would establish a second industrial development in the state to stimulate the economy and create job opportunities for Rivers residents.
The SDP gubernatorial candidate said political parties were mere vehicles, saying it was the people who made up the party.
He said, “Finally, I told you earlier that a political party is nothing but a vehicle. It’s the people who celebrate. People of Rivers, today you have established the SDP, the largest political party in Rivers State. You have this power.
“All these other parties, because you were there, that’s why they were great. Now that you are here, this one is also great. The SDP is today the largest political party in Rivers State .
Abe said the creation of job opportunities does not happen through laws and executive orders, and that his administration will create an atmosphere through which the people of Rivers will earn money.
He said, “We told you that since the construction of Trans-Amadi, no other industrial zones have been established in this state. We will establish another one.
“We told you that giving our people opportunities to get jobs and jobs is not something that should be done by laws or decree. We will create an atmosphere where the people of Rivers can earn money.
Abe sympathized with residents of the state’s Orashi region, whose communities had been submerged by the floods, saying that if elected, his administration would find a lasting solution to the ongoing challenge.
He said, “The other thing I want to say is that last week we postponed this program due to flooding in the Orashi area. The entire Orashi area in Rivers State, every time, is flooded.
“We all know these things are not man made and every time it happens we seem totally taken aback. Only to a tree will you say take an ax and you shoot it down and it will always stay there.
“I want to reassure the people of Rivers, we can’t stop the water from coming if it’s part of the water. But, there are many things we can do to prepare ourselves for things we know can haunt us. We can dredge our rivers every year so that when the water goes up, it can go down quickly. We can build canals to divert water away from where people live.
“If that becomes impossible, we can move people from where we know they can’t stay to places where they can stay. You know it’s safer to move people; we have already done that. So, I want to reassure our friends, our brothers, our sisters in the places that are flooded; yes, it can happen again. But, I want to assure you that it will never be this bad again.
