Your performance in office is not determined by the political party – Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike

Aug. 09 (THEWILL) – Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said a leader’s performance is not determined by political parties but by the individual.

The governor said it was wrong for people to think that leadership is a function of a political party, when in fact it is the mindset of the individual.

Wike spoke on Tuesday at the inauguration of the Ogbunuabali-Eastern dual bypass road in Port Harcourt.

After welcoming two governors to the All Progressives Congress platform (Dave Umahi and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Ebonyi and Lagos States respectively) on Monday for the rollover commissioning, Wike on Tuesday welcomed another member of high level of the APC, Senator Aliyu Wamakko.

Wike, who has downplayed the role of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in his administration, argued on Tuesday that his performance had nothing to do with his party membership.

According to the governor, “leadership is not about the party, leadership is about the individual.

“The party is only a vehicle to realize your ambition, to be able to tell your people that I have this capacity, I have this quality to render services to you.

“If you take me today from the PDP to another party, I will continue to play. So, it is not because I am in the PDP that I play.

Wike, whose membership in the PDP has come under scrutiny over the past two months, clarified that “it’s because I have this passion for my people. It’s because I have a commitment to serve my people.

“Take me to the YPP, allow me to become what I will become there, I will perform. Take me to any party, I’ll perform. So it’s not the party that makes you perform.

Wike said while others had used economic hardship as an excuse not to show leadership and service to their people, he found a more rewarding way to support projects in Rivers.

He reaffirmed his commitment to service, insisting that his performance is not a measure of membership in the PDP, but rather his undying love, passion and commitment to render effective service to the people.

Governor de Rivers continued his outburst against the PDP after losing the presidential ticket to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as well as the Vice Presidential spot to his Delta counterpart, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa.

In inaugurating the Ogbunuabali-Eastern Bypass, former Sokoto State Governor Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko said Wike had demonstrated he had the ability to serve the people of Rivers.

Senator Wamakko said that any well-meaning government should serve to fulfill the aspirations and aspirations of the governed. He noted that as a talk-and-do governor, Wike has done well for his people.
